Tu Fu and Herbal Medicine

Tu Fu, the greatest realistic poet of ancient China, was at the same time a hard-working farmer who grew herbs.

In his poems, we can see many describes about the beautiful and fragrant herbs such as cassia tora, gardenia, lilac etc. These graceful verse like graceful melody can be created by nobody but this poem saint.

Writing poem is a way to express his disagreement and angry about the times which he lived. And Tu Fu had learned much about herbal medicine and how to grow them. After plucking the herbs, he dried them and marked them and stored them, in order to take by himself or sell to others who need them.

Tu Fu liked drinking too. When he was drunk, the drug garden became the best place to rest and recover, which was the most important place, his own paradise.

Largehead Atractylodes Rh(白术)

This herb belongs to spleen and stomach meridian. It can accelerate the process of digest, expel redundant water of body, reduce sweat, anti-abortion. It used to cure inappetence, abdominal distension, diarrhea, veitigo, spontaneous perspiration, edema, and too much quickening.

When accelerating the process of digest, it can be used with codonopsis pilosula and liquorice. And when doing with abdominal distension, it can be used with zhiqiao(枳壳). C henpi(陈皮) and tuckahoe(茯苓)with 白术 is good to promote the functiion of spleen and make the body drier.

Usually the dose of it is 6 to 12 g.

Fruit of Siberian Cocklebur

Siberian cocklebur is a kind of herb which can be used to cure many diseases. This herbage plant can be seen almost everywhere of China, because it is easy to grow. When I was young, when I played with other children outside, we often picked the fruit up, threw it to each other as our tiny weapons. As it has many thorns, it is easy to stick on our clothes or hairs. At that time I did not know this small weed was so helpful to us, until recently, did I find its various functions.

The fruit of siberian cocklebur alone, which is the most poisonous part of it, is a common herbal medicine. It can reduce lumbago, cure allergic rhinitis,malaria, parotitis, and ulcer of lower limbs, toothache, etc.
